Age spots are the result of sun damage. They occur when we expose ourselves to too much sunshine, without having first applied a high enough factor of sun cream. Lots of sunbathing when we’re young can lead to age spots when we’re older, as they tend to occur as our skin matures and our collagen production begins to reduce.
As age spots are a phenomenon that are most commonly associated with mature skin, removing them can have a rejuvenating effect on the face. Here at the Skin Laser Clinic in the corner of the Royal Free Hospital, we remove age spots on a regular basis. We use the laser treatment to target the pigmented skin. Following treatment, your age spot will fade, leaving you looking younger, with a more even skin tone.
How does laser age spot removal work?
When you first visit us for a consultation, we’ll assess whether your age spot is suitable for laser treatment. There’s a chance that if it’s not we’ll prescribe a cream to remove it, IPL, or even a biopsy, if we suspect the age spot is harbouring more than just pigmented cells. Our doctor-led team is qualified to perform all of these treatments, so when you approach us with this type of skin condition, you can be assured that we will be able to either provide you with treatment, or a referral.
The laser works by damaging the cells which are producing too much melanin on the skin surface. It involves a beam of powerful green light penetrating the skin. This light is then absorbed by the brown pigmented cells, heating them up and forcing them to separate. This is the action which will trigger the fading of the age spot in the following weeks.
One session of laser treatment is rarely enough. We’ll be able to advise how many you’ll need when we meet you, but it’s usually 2 or 3. The treatment will take place in our modern, comfortable practise rooms and we’ll do our best to make sure you’re relaxed beforehand. However, because of the brightness of the light, you will need to wear safety googles and please be aware that the machine is very noisy.
When the light penetrates the skin, it will probably feeling like you’re being ‘twanged’ with an elastic band. Afterwards the targeted skin area may sting a little. Once the scab comes off and the pinkness begins to fade, you’ll notice fresh, new skin tissue where the age spot once was and that the colour of it is a lot less prominent than it once was.
